Who we are

The Genebanks Initiative forms part of CGIAR’s new Research Portfolio, delivering science and innovation to tranform food, land and water systems in a climate crisis.

Oversight of the Genebank Initiative is provided by the CGIAR System Organisation with guidance from a management team.

However, the day-to-day implementation of the Platform’s activities is performed by the individual managers of CGIAR genebanks and germplasm health units and by CGIAR policy experts.

The Initiative lead is Charlotte Lusty.

The Genebanks

The 11 CGIAR genebanks currently conserve 730,000 of cereals and grain legumes, forage crops, tree species, root and tuber crops, bananas and crop wild relatives.
